I've got several sketches to share today.
Here's the only sketch I did for this painting. I had no idea what i wanted my background to look like - only that I wanted to paint a hummingbird for Mom. This little guy is cute, but I'm so happy with how he evolved in the final image. He's so much cuter in color!

This sketch stretched across three 8x10 pages and had to be pieced together in Photoshop after scanning. The first two panels (far left and middle) came together very easily and naturally. I've never drawn people in this style before, so that really amazed me! The last panel, with the astronaut, was much more difficult. I didn't scan them, but that poor person went through about 10 pages of paper before she looked right.
COMMISSION SKETCHES: ReithThese were the first 2 images I drew of this character, and I wasn't happy with either of them. The head of the first one is off somehow, or maybe the neck. In the second, there are several problems. Awkward pose, waist is too small, head is - again - off. I need to practice drawing men! Lol. There are several anatomy issues in both, but I'm still learning.

I decided that waist-up was not going to work for me with this character, so even though the commissioner only paid for a waist-up portrait I went ahead and drew full-body. I love the pose here; I referenced several photos as I was drawing, and it really shows. MUCH better anatomy and proportions. See? References are AWESOME!
The plant is another feature I'm quite pleased with. I ran out of room on the page, but I only needed the sketch as a guide, since anatomy for the plant was less important. It was meant to look strange and exotic, so I had a lot of freedom there.
Some of the details of the clothes are off. The pants, especially. I need to practice more with clothes, and with fabric in general.
Check out the final version! I'm so pleased with it.
